The horror.
Huge trade goes through
May 24, 2002 (Official Press Release)

Ther MetroStars announced today that the team has acquired forward Mamadou Diallo, midfielder Andy Williams and defender Ted Chronopoulos from the New England Revolution in exchange for Daniel Hernandez, Diego Serna and Brian Kamler.

To make room on the roster for Diallo and Williams, both of whom are senior internationals, the MetroStars have also waived senior international forward Darin Lewis. Diallo (Senegal) and Williams (Jamaica) join with Rodrigo Faria (Brazil) to give the team the MLS-maximum three senior international players.

All three newly-acquired Metros are expected to join the team and be available for tomorrow night's home game at Giants Stadium against the Kansas City Wizards.

"We're thrilled to be able to acquire three talented players who will all be important pieces of our lineup," said Sakiewicz. "In order to that, we obviously had to give up some players who have meant a great deal to this team, but the bottom line is that we are now a better team than we were yesterday, and we have greatly improved our chances to win not only the Eastern Division but the MLS Cup as well."

Diallo, Major League Soccer's Budweiser Scoring Champion (26 goals, four assists) in 2000 while with Tampa Bay, has totaled 82 points (36 goals, 10 assists) over 57 regular-season games during the past three seasons. In seven games with the Revolution this year, Diallo has notched a goal and an assist, ranking second in the league in shots on goal (19) and tying for fourth overall (along with Rodrigo Faria) in total shots with 30.

Williams, the Revolution's 2001 Honda MVP, played in five of New England's seven games this year, notching two assists. Now in his fifth MLS season, the Jamaican international and veteran of the 1998 World Cup played collegiately at the University of Rhode Island, where he remains the school's all-time leading scorer with 52 goals and 45 assists (149 points).

Chronopoulos had been the lone remaining player from New England's original 1996 lineup. A two-time MLS All-Star (1997, 2000), the Lorma Linda, CA native had started all five of the games he appeared in this season, notching two assists while manning the left side of the Revs' defense. Over his seven seasons in MLS, Chronopoulos has collected 16 goals and 14 assists (46 points) in 119 regular season games.
